Chapter Sixteen

Nathan ran the roller up and down one of the walls in his uncle’s office. The striking teal color stood out against the three adjacent white walls yet to be painted.

His uncle appeared at the archway. “When you done with that wall, my boy, close up paint.” He pointed at him with a grin. “You working overtime, not regular hours.”

“Sure, Thío.”

“Be back in little bit to see the finished work.”

Nathan dipped the roller in the tin pan holding the paint. After collecting enough of the hue, he coated the next section of the wall.

Settling back into the rhythm of his work, his mind wandered to Christina. Who was that guy who’d shown up out of nowhere? He sure seemed like he knew her well… too well. Nathan wrinkled his nose, then pushed away the disturbing thoughts and concentrated on the wall. Again, it wasn’t his business. If she decided to tell him the next time she saw him, so be it. He wouldn’t push.

His heart tightened as he remembered her expression at the sound of that guy’s voice. Genuine fear and something akin to sorrow had shone in her dark eyes. And he hadn’t missed her face turn pale. Nathan stiffened. He was worrying over her, and she wasn’t even his. He bent and pressed more paint onto his roller. He raised his brows and tilted his head to the side. And he didn’t belong to her. He needed to let it go, but his heart wouldn’t allow him. Gritting his teeth, he swept the remaining wall with wide swaths of the teal paint.

“Nathan, my boy, a young lady here to see you,” his uncle called from behind him.

He swung around. Christina stood there in all her beauty, with hands clasped between her curvy hips. A small smile brightened her face.

Just the sight of her made his heart skip a beat. Reflexively he pressed his hand against his chest. Where had that guy gone? Did it matter now that she was there?

“Christina. Hey.” He set down the roller in the pan and walked over to her. “How’d you find me?”

“Texted Becky, and she asked George.”

“Oh right. I’d let him know I’d come here after I left you and… uh… the man you were talking to.”

Her lips pursed together. “Are you still offering that short jaunt to Pyrgos?”

She didn’t want to talk about the guy. His worries about the mystery man fell away, and excitement coursed through him. “Yes. Definitely, yes.”

“Well.” She spread out her arms, looking down at her soft, pink blouse, tan shorts, and back at him. “I’m ready to go when you are.”

Nathan pictured her in his arms. He was more than ready to go with her, but the painting supplies on the floor glared at him. He couldn’t leave without cleaning up first. “I’m sorry, but could you give me about fifteen minutes? I need to finish up here and talk to my uncle.”

“Sure. Meet me in the hotel’s lobby?”

He grinned. “That would be perfect.”

“All right. See you soon.
